50 Aviation Terminologies you must learn

A


AFCS – Automatic Flight control system. 


Airworthiness – A term used to describe both the legal and mechanical status of an aircraft with regard to its readiness for flight.


Aisle – The path between the seats to walk.

Apron – Place where aircrafts are parked to load and unload the passengers and cargo.


APU Auxiliary Power Unit , Device that provides power for engine - starting and other systems while on he ground. Mostly present on large aircrafts and some business jets.

ATA – Actual Time of Arrival, The exact time when an aircraft arrived to an airport. ATC – Air Traffic Control, A ground-based service that ensures safety of air traffic by directing aircraft during take-off, landing, and while flying in the airspace.

ATD – Actual Time of Departure, The exact time when an aircraft left the airport.

AVTUR – Aviation Turbine Fuel.


B


Baggage – luggage and other items brought on the airplane by passengers.

Board – Enter into the aircraft.


C


Capt – Captain. The person who is completely responsible for the aircraft and the people inside the aircraft. when it is in the air.  Cargo – Goods carried on an aircraft. Cargo Terminal – The building of an airport used by Cargo. Checked Baggage – Baggage that travels in the cargo section of the aircraft. Passengers cannot get access to their checked baggage during the journey. Climb – The act of increasing aircraft altitude, typically to a designated level.


Clearance – The authorization provided by air traffic control for aircraft to proceed with any type of actions or moments, which is designed to prevent aircraft collisions.


D


DeBoard – Exit from the aircraft.

Direct Flight – A flight with one or more intermediate stops, but no change of aircraft.


Domestic flight – A flight that starts and ends in the same country. This is usually between two cities in the same country.


E


ETA – Estimated Time of Arrival, Planned or expected time of an aircraft coming to the airport.

ETD – Estimated Time of Departure, Planned or expected time of an aircraft leaving the airport.


ETE – Estimated Time en Route, The amount of time you will spend traveling to a destination.


F


Flight Deck – An area at the front of airplane where the pilots controls the aircraft. in other words, the cockpit.

Freight – All air cargo excluding mail.

Fuselage – The central portion of an aircraft to which wings, tail is attached. and also intended to house the flight crew, passengers, and cargo.

GPU – Ground Power Unit.


H


Hangar– A building made to hold aircraft for storing, maintenance, assembly, etc.

International flight – A flight that starts in one county and ends in an other country.


K


Knot– A measurement of speed that takes into account nautical miles: 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 6076 feet per hour. 1 mph =1 mile per hour = 5280 feet per hour.


L


Landing The act of an airplane returning to the ground.


M


Mach – The ratio of aircraft speed to the speed of sound through the medium where the aircraft is traveling.


MSL – Mean Sea Level, The average level of the surface of an ocean used as a basis for vertical measurements.

METAR – Form of weather report delivered on a continuous basis.


MTOW – Maximum Take-Off Weight. Maximum weight an aircraft can take off with.


N


Narrow Body Aircraft – A smaller type of aircraft that has a single-aisle inside.

No Show – Passenger with a confirmed reservation and didn't checked in or board the aircraft.


Non Stop Flight – Flight with no intermediate stops.


P


Passenger Terminal – The main building of an airport used by passengers. Payload – The weight of the content carried in an aircraft, including passengers, pilots, cargo, etc. Pax – The term used to represent passengers

Propeller – A piece of aircraft equipment that contains rotating blades, creating engine thrust.

R


Radar – It is a device used to determine an object's direction and distance.

RWY – Runway, A defined rectangular area on a land prepared for the landing and takeoff of aircraft.

T


Take-off – The act of an airplane leaving the ground.


Touchdown – The point when aircraft touches the ground.


Turbulence – A sudden violent shift in air flow caused by irregular atmospheric motion. TWY – Taxiway, The area or path used by an aircraft to move on ground between runway, hanger and Apron


W


Wide-Body Aircraft – An aircraft with more than one aisles inside.


Z


Zulu Time – A term synonymous with UTC (Universal Coordinated Time), which is the same as Greenwich Mean Time. Pilots file all flight plans in Zulu Time.
