Uses of Phonetics :
Communication plays a very major role in these kinds of industries. The purpose of using phonetics is for a better understanding of communication. In Aviation we have a lot of code names for almost everything like runways, flights, parking bays, airline codes, aircraft names, etc. All these codes will be the combination of both numerical and alphabetical characters. In alphabets, we have multiple letters that pronounced with similar sounds like B & E, Q & U, A & K. While pronouncing these letters in telephones or radios it leads to major misunderstandings which can lead to some horrible accidents. To avoid these kinds of misunderstandings and accidents employees use these phonetics. And to avoid the miscommunications in numbers each number is pronounced separately, like nineteen(19) is said as One(1) Nine (9), Thirty-seven (37) is said as Three (3) Seven (7). These small changes in communication helps aviation to be safer.
Example :
Instead of saying Runway number 34-R it is said as 3 4 Romeo,
Instead of saying Flight number 6E 459 it is said as 6 Echo 4 5 9.
